I'm pretty sure it is a peregrine falcon. All you expert birders correct me if I'm wrong. Seen at an urban park here in Chicago.
If only I had a zoom lens!
Added 2/15/08: I have been corrected and the bird is actually a kestrel. Maybe not quite as glamorous as the once-endangered peregrine but still cool.

I'm not an expert birder, but it does look like a peregrine falcon. I think you should go ahead and get that darn zoom lens. I'll even help you think up convincing reasons WHY you need it. :^)
I'm impressed with what you managed to achieve without a zoom! If I'd taken that pic, it would have had an empty sky or blurred smudge.
Perigrine? Bird of Prey is as specific as I'd like to be.
I'd upload it to birdforum if I wanted to get an opinion.-The main thing is that you were excited about what you saw.-That's all that matters.
