Indulge Me

Are you hungry yet

The theme for Moody Monday is "indulgent" and I'm going to indulge myself by posting more than one photo. None of them are exactly award winning as the conditions and the photographer weren't the sharpest but here are some indulgent goodies from last year's trip to Spain. Yum. Are you hungry yet?

"How" Strange!

How Strange

This display is probably very old but from a 2011 perspective it seems in very poor taste. It is a lousy photo as I took it from my car window while at a stop light but it is worth sharing, I thought.

Remember Me

Then You'll Remember Me

A page from a 1919 music book and forget-me-nots from my garden--the moment is made more poignant since the flower seeds were handed out at my nephew's funeral.

For Moody Monday, "Nostalgic."

Colorful on Monday

Red, White, Blue and Other Hues

Moody Monday today is "colorful" and I had just the picture, taken, by lucky coincidence, yesterday. I hope your eyes enjoy it.

Ugly in a pretty kind of way. Or is it pretty in an ugly kind of way. In either case, it is a cicada.

So what is paradoxical about this? Submitted to Moody Monday "horny" since I don't have any toad pictures.

Moody Monday--Heavenly

I could have gone with an easy picture for this meme, like a photo of ice cream but I was drawn back to my cemetery photos. It took me a while to find the one I wanted but then I found this photo of a poem written by a bereaved family and preserved in ceramic. Somehow in the context of a family grieving the loss of a twelve year old daughter, the poem is all the more touching in that it is poorly crafted.

Shirley darling--B&W

In case it is hard to read, the final stanza says:

Wait for us my sweet,
Some day, we will join you,
Rest in peace,
With the angels from above.

Here are pictures of the ceramic photo of the girl and of her headstone.

Moody Monday--Disorganized

Desk

I feel like I've just gone to my first twelve step group and confessed. Yes, this is my desk, the one at home and not at work. At work, my secretary cleans up for me and I try harder to keep up appearances. I also do not share that desk with two kids who use it for computer games. I have no clue how a beach towel wound up on it. That I promptly moved.
Like most things in life, the desk and what is on it have a story. The desk I bought at a garage sale years ago. It was a nightmare moving it since Chicago stairways are very narrow. Someone previously had even sawed the middle legs short to get it through a door. It is an old fashioned typewriter desk with a table on springs that can be pulled out. I refinished the top myself years ago. I've had the desk for more than 20 years and have no idea how old it is, although it doesn't pass as an antique.
The loud curtains behind the desk came from another yard sale. They were hand sewn and fit the window size perfectly. When we first moved in to our house, we had a million windows to cover. Some were clad from Martha Stewart's line at Target. Others from wherever I could find them cheaply. This house has so many windows we may never get proper curtains for them all. My kids' rooms have the nicest curtains, sewn for them by their grandmother who has a bit of Martha Stewart in her.
A guest recently asked why I have two monitors on my desk. It is not to multitask. We recently got a new computer and I am still working on transferring files which is quite an ordeal, if you ask me. Probably I should just give up and toss it all. Or buy one of those largish storage drives. It is such a struggle keeping up with technology, isn't it?

Addendum:
As living proof of my disorganization, I've already missed the post date for Moody Monday. Sigh. I guess it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Moody Monday--Indecent

Given my resolution to never post anything my kids will kill me for later, I thought I did not have a photo for this meme. Yesterday I was taking photos of some lovely homes on Michigan Avenue on the south side of Chicago and saw this advertisement on the bus stop. It was in such poor taste that I couldn't resist photographing it. I didn't realize it fit the meme until just now. Eddie Murphy, shame on you for stooping so low!

Moody Monday---Gluttonous

Rice candy-1
My entry to Moody Monday today. Not a perfect fit but the kid on the cover is a bit rotund and it is a candy box.
These candies have a story. (Doesn't everything?)
When I was a kid in Seattle, it was a real treat to go have dinner in China Town. One of our favorite restaurants was named Tai Tung (sp?). I was introduced to foods that now I find just fine raw but at the time were quite a shock--squid, octopus, and other assorted sea foods. I have a vague memory my elementary school class may have gone to China Town once as part of a field trip. Nowadays, going out for Chinese food is much more routine.
On our outings, we sometimes went to a store or two. There was one trinket that my brother and I were given on at least one occasion--it was a little wooden "pop-gun" with a cork in it that would pop out with air pressure. And as a special treat we were bought each a box of the rice candy pictured here. The candy itself didn't thrill me so much as the rice paper it is wrapped in. It looks like plastic wrap but melts on the tongue. It was so much fun to unwrap the candy and carefully put the rice paper in my mouth and feel it dissolve. It had a magical appeal when I was young.
Now I buy these candies for my kids to share my joy in them. I doubt they find it as exciting as I did. Their world is somewhat bigger than mine was. I think that is a good thing.
