Forlorn

Looking for a Good Home

I'm feeling as lost as this house. I've been fighting an infection for days--no I'm not ill, but my computer is. My son's computer was infested with Trojans and seems to have died, short of a trip to the Geek Squad. I thought it was because he was playing with animated screen savers. In a moment of stupid kindness I let him play his favorite on-line game on my computer. Within hours I was breeding Trojans like rabbits.
I'm hoping I've (mostly) solved the problem but in the meantime one of my networking software programs seems to have disappeared. Sigh. It took me months to get my networks working smoothly. Now it is back to the drawing board.
The moral of the story--don't share!

And make sure your internet security software is constantly updated. That, and scan your system regularly.

That does stink. We have one computer that is for the kids. The teenager has access to an additional machine. No one touches Wifey's box, or my work machine, unless directly supervised.

Sounds familiar. After my son plays computer games, the computer is terribly slow and keeps randomly closing out on websites. My husband, who knows about such things, runs lots of virus scans and updates everything all the time. Personally, I wouldn't know where to start.

I hope you and your computer feel better soon!

I solved the problem by giving my daughters (10 and 12 yo) plain user accounts, with no rights whatsoever, on their own Windows XP system. If they want to install anything, they have to call me. This is a little investment, since the time to repair a virus infested PC would be a lot more. Furthermore, I can control how much time they spend on the computer, since I am the only one who knows their account password. One last thing: OpenDNS (or similar) with adult filters and they can navigate the Internet all by themselves! An up to date antivirus will do the rest (a free one is good enough)
